The Preventative Health Checklist Every Man Needs

preventative health checklist for men

Historically, men have often taken a reactive approach to their health, only visiting a doctor when something is wrong. However, the key to a long and healthy life is being proactive. Preventive care, through regular check-ups and screenings, can detect potential problems early when they are most treatable.

At Rayo Health Clinic, we encourage men to take control of their health. Use this age-by-age guide as a roadmap for the essential health screenings you should be discussing with your provider.

In Your 20s and 30s: Building a Foundation

This is the time to establish healthy habits and a relationship with a Primary Care Provider (PCP).

Annual Physical:Establish a baseline of your health. This is the time to have an open conversation about your lifestyle, diet, exercise, and any mental health concerns.

Blood Pressure Screening:Should be checked at least once every two years. High blood pressure often has no symptoms.

Cholesterol Check:A baseline check is a good idea, with follow-ups as recommended by your doctor, especially if you have a family history of heart disease.

Testicular Cancer Self-Exams:This cancer is most common in younger men. Your provider can show you how to perform a monthly self-exam.

In Your 40s: The Decade of Diligence

As you enter your 40s, certain health risks begin to increase, and screening becomes even more important.

Blood Sugar (Glucose) Screening:The American Diabetes Association recommends starting screening for Type 2 diabetes at age 35. This is a simple blood test.

Prostate Cancer Discussion:For men at high risk—including African American men and those with a close relative who had prostate cancer—the conversation about screening should begin now. Your provider will discuss the pros and cons of the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test.

Colorectal Cancer Screening:The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force now recommends that screening for colorectal cancer begin for everyone at age 45. A colonoscopy is the gold standard, but your provider can discuss all available options with you.

In Your 50s and Beyond: Staying Proactive

Continue all the previous screenings as recommended by your provider, with a few key additions.

Prostate Cancer Screening (Standard Risk):If you are at average risk, the discussion about PSA testing should begin at age 50.

Shingles Vaccine:Recommended for adults 50 and older.

Bone Density Scan:While more common in women, men can also get osteoporosis. Your doctor may recommend a screening based on your risk factors.

Your Health is Your Greatest Asset

This checklist is a guide, not a substitute for personalized medical advice. Your health history and lifestyle will determine the right plan for you. The most important step you can take is to build a partnership with a primary care provider.
